Florida Hurricane Insurance Claims Attorney
Florida Hurricane Attorney notes that after Florida dodged the Hurricane Katrina damage wrought on some other states, there were thousands of claims made. According to William J. Edwards, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, there was a conspiracy to steal or aid and abet in stealing approximately $92,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”) for emergency assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita between September 2005 through January 2006.

Eleven defendants, were charged with conspiring to steal $90,000 in FEMA funds. FEMA had issued the checks for emergency assistance for Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. According to the Government lawyer, some defendants contacted the FEMA hotline for Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Rita and falsely informed FEMA the hurricanes had displaced them.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina ruined New Orleans, Louisiana, and the surrounding area. On September 24, 2005, Hurricane Rita destroyed areas in Louisiana and Texas. FEMA provided financial assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Payments were made for emergency assistance.
